Hotels in Turku Finland: Aurajoki
For those that live in Turku we are obsessed with our Aurajoki, all throughout the year you can see people sitting alongside the river bank with their friends and loved ones.
In the winter if the ice is thick enough you can see those brave enough to skate on the river.
I am not and will not ever be brave enough to do that.
The trail along the Aurajoki is accessible for everyone and extends from the quaint village of Kuralan Kylämäki to the historic Koroinen, the renowned Turku Cathedral all the way down to Turku Castle.
In the summer you can catch Turku’s public transportation the Föli Vesibussi (water bus) to Ruissalo Boatyard where there are a some restaurant options from pizza to barbecue as well as performances at the summer theater.

Welcome to Port Arthur, affectionately known as Portsa, a captivating neighborhood characterized by its collection of traditional wooden houses and charming cobblestone streets.
Among locals, it holds the distinction of being one of the most beautiful areas in Turku, and it is renowned as one of the most picturesque residential districts in all of Finland.
As you stroll through the streets of Portsa, you will encounter notable landmarks that add to its allure. The iconic Mikaelinkirkko, also known as Michael’s Church, graces the neighborhood with its presence, offering a glimpse into the architectural and historical richness of the area.
Another great sight in the area is Kakola Hill, which once served as a prison but has since been transformed into luxury apartments and the intriguing Kakola Hotel.
Kakola Hotel
In 2022, we had the pleasure of staying at the Kakola Hotel, where our room came equipped with a delightful bathtub, complete with complimentary bath bubbles provided by the friendly front desk.
During our stay we enjoyed dinner and had an amazing breakfast at the hotel restaurant at Ravintola Ruben. I still think about those mushrooms today, they were so delicious!
Since our visit in 2022, the area surrounding Kakola Hotel has undergone exciting developments. Now, guests can enjoy a range of fantastic experiences, including the luxurious Kakola Spa, the delightful KBC Taproom, and Kakolan Ruusu, the sister establishment of Turku’s very own Michelin Star-winning restaurant, Ravintola Kaskis.
Without a doubt, we wholeheartedly recommend exploring through the Kakola area—it’s a must-visit!

[mailerlite_form form_id=1]Where NOT to Stay Turku Finland
If you’re staying in Turku I strongly recommend staying closer to the center or somewhere along the Aurajoki, mostly because it’s easier to get around the city and you have more options to explore around you.
I have noticed on AirBnB people have listed places throughout Turku for example:
Hirvensalo
I don’t recommend staying in Hirvensalo unless you have a car. While there is a lot to see on the island, like Brinkhall Kartano and Hirvensalo Ski, and the Taidekappeli. Unfortunately, there are few buses that go out to Hirvensalo (föli bus). On the other hand if you do have the time and a car I really recommend taking a drive through the area
Kaarina
Kaarina is a beautiful residential area, and is more set up for locals, there are buses that take you into the center but the bus ride is around 45-60 mins depending on how many people use the bus along the way.
If you are coming to Turku with a car there are limited parking spaces in the city, and the city has started to transition to hourly parking halls.
Deciding Where to Stay in Turku – Final Recommendations
There are a lot more hotels in the Turku area that aren’t mentioned in this post, I chose not to mention them because they don’t have the best reviews, and a lot of the time their facilities are described as outdated.
Additionally, air conditioning isn’t really needed in Finland during the fall or spring.. and definitely not needed in the winter. I think it is important to have it in the summer.
One because I am an American and love my AC and two because the summers are unfortunately getting warmer here and the heat can be a bit unbearable for those who are used to having the luxury of AC.
