Solo Sokos Hotel Turun Seurahuone and A Little Bit of History

With its beautiful exterior and interior design, stepping into this hotel feels like being transported back to the elegance of the roaring 20s.

Originally built in 1928, the Solo Sokos Hotel Turun Seurahuone underwent reconstruction in 2019. During this process, Jaakko Puro, an architect, recognized the inherent potential of the building and provided it with the captivating design that defines the Solo Sokos Hotel Turun Seurahuone today.

This historic hotel and the city of Turku holds quite the remarkable story. The hotel can trace its roots back to 1928, which was a few years after Finland gained independence in 1917 and after Finland’s civil war in 1918.

So thankful for Tuomas’ extensive knowledge of Finland’s history, it just makes writing this so much more fun!

Despite the lingering effects of the conflict, Turku was focused on forging ahead and embracing the future which was when the tulenkantajat movement began.

Finnish literature and art began to emerge, fostering an urban atmosphere that allowed Finland and its culture to extend their reach across Europe.

The Solo Sokos Hotel Turun Seurahuone is truly a testament of time that shows the progress Finland has made since becoming independent and making its mark in the world.

6. Cozy Lobby Areas

When we first arrived to the hotel I was blown away by the amount of space there is in the lobby to sit back and relax.

While waiting to be checked in we noticed a group of women preparing for an exciting bachelorette weekend, and nearby, old friends gathering before a walking tour provided by the hotel.

Additionally, the lobby offers a mini fridge with snacks, perfect for a quick bite or drink if you’re feeling hungry or thirsty.

7. Luxurious and Spacious Rooms

We were invited to stay at Solo Sokos Hotel Turun Seurahuone Turku’s Solo Up Room and we absolutely loved it.

Our room 514 had a great view out of the window that made us consider moving to the center of Turku. It was really one of those moments where we could see ourselves living there.

We also enjoyed that there was a spacious area where we could sit leisurely and sip on some drinks after our dinner reservation.

The spacious area makes it great for hosting friends and family when you are in town, and there is a mini-bar in the room that has something suitable for everyone including non-alcoholic drinks and sodas.

Or maybe you would like to treat your guests or yourself to some coffee and tea after dinner, you can do that too with the coffee machine in the room.

Oh did I mention there is also hot chocolate?

8. Irresistibly Comfortable Beds That You’ll Never Want to Say Goodbye To

Normally when I stay in hotels I can’t help but to miss my own bed. This was the first time I didn’t feel that way.

We truly enjoyed our huge king size bed! More importantly we enjoyed that there wasn’t a valley from the two beds being pushed together. Like you typically see hotels in Finland

Tuomas and I were able to cuddle and when he got too hot I was able to push him away and find a cool spot on the bed.

We were thankful that Solo Sokos Hotel Turun Seurahuone’s brunch runs a bit later than normal hotels, so we were able to spend a relaxing morning in bed catching up on our sleep debt.

9. You Can Adjust the Room to Fit Your Needs

The American in me loves that I was able to adjust the room to fit our needs, and by our needs I really mean my needs 😆

I was able to set the thermostat in the room to as cold as possible. Tuomas complained at first then when we woke up in the morning he was happy that I turned it down low, the blankets on the bed were nice and warm so we slept like babies.

Additionally, the room darkeners were needed as the midnight sun was slowly making it’s way back to Finland.

We were able to watch the sunset and just when the time was right we closed the curtain and enjoyed being in the dark cool room.

After spending a night at Turun’s Solo Sokos Hotel Turun Seurahuone, you’ll awaken with recharged social batteries, ready to seize the day ahead!

We started off with the Asparagus Three Ways which consisted of fresh grilled asparagus, with asparagus purée. Then drizzled with light asparagus dressing and lastly topped with a crispy bacon crumble.

For our next course we savored a perfectly cooked lamb sirloin. That was served with grilled asparagus, parsnip purée, topped with roasted garlic sauce, and a serving of garlic potatoes.

We also enjoyed their drink package which perfectly complemented each course. We were truly swept away by the flavor combinations that brought out the best of the spring season.

14. Retro Fitness Center with Sauna

I would like to get into the habit of checking out the gym when I stay at a hotel. And you always have to start somewhere someday so I chose this stay to check out the facilities.

When you walk into the gym you will see vintage exercise photographs lining the wall as well as the same 1920s vibe that is seen throughout the hotel. The gym was spacious and had an open concept design so you wouldn’t feel crowded if someone else was working out with you.

The equipment in Solo Sokos Hotel Turun Seurahuone’s gym compliments a wide range of exercise styles.

They even had a punching bag where I was able to show off my skills to Tuomas 💪🏽

I have heard really nice things about their sauna area but was unable to go. Because aunt flo had managed to visit me on my birthday and I still haven’t figured out how to do the whole sauna while on your period thing.

If you’re interested in checking out their sauna then you will need to book a time at the front desk. You should book it just for me since I wasn’t able to go 🥹
